As there is a group being insured underwriters can be more lenient than with an individual. To some extent they can accept that some will represent above average health risk whilst others will be below average.
Most life offices are wiling to provide a large amount of life cover to groups without evidence of health so long as certain conditions are met, in order to control the overall risk. The conditions looked for are as follows,
- That a minimum percentage of the eligible employees join the scheme. The percentage varies according to the size of the scheme, but a minimum of 75% for a group of over 100 would not be uncommon.
- Individual employees are actually at work on the day when they become eligible to join the scheme. It might be alternatively worded that ‘all eligible employees are physically and mentally capable of working’, so that those on holiday are also included.
- The group of lives must exist as a group for some purpose other than just in order to obtain group life cover.
In some cases evidence of health might be required where the group presented certain high risk characteristics such as,
- Groups of advanced age,
- Groups involved in higher risk occupations especially where there is a risk of a single event killing more than one employee e.g.’ explosives factory.
- Group members who were ill when they were eligible to join the scheme, and now want to join.
- All lives of a small group, for instance a group of fewer than 20 persons.
- Individuals where their personal sum insured is much higher than the rest of the group.
