Group Income Protection Insurance and Critical Illness Cover

These are group policies sold for the benefit of their employees.

Group income protection polices

The policies will normally fall outside of the benefits allowed under an approved occupation pension scheme by the Inland Revenue. The policies will normally cover all eligible employees within a certain age range of say 21 to 65. The terms will be similar to individual IPI policies although underwriting will be simplified as a group is involved. Cover is usually based on a percentage of salary and will cease on the employee leaving the companies service. The employer is the insured and pays the premium.

The deferred period is normally 26 weeks to come close to the statutory sick pay period. The cover is for employees being unable through accident or sickness to follow their own occupation. Benefits are payable up to natural retirement age or recovery and return to work however recent adverse claim trends have encourage insurance offices to introduce a maximum benefit period of a number of years such as five years.

The exclusion list on group IPI policies may be slightly reduced than those found on individual IPI policies.

Group Critical Illness cover

Again this is unlikely to be an allowable benefit under an Inland Revenue approved occupational pension scheme.   Cover would be for eligible employees with the insured being the employer who pays the premium. The insurer would limit the eligible employee age range as between say 21 and 65 years of age. Reduced underwriting criteria as a group is being insured, but it is normal to exclude pre-existing conditions.   Cover can be for a fixed amount with perhaps employees banded into groups, or be expressed as a multiple of salary.   The range of critical illnesses cover will be the same as on individual policies and will vary from life office to life office.   Cover will cease on the employee leaving the employers service or retirement or exceeding the eligible age range.   Benefits are usually only payable if the employee survives for so many days after the diagnosis and are usually paid direct to the employee.
